Hiking & Walking
Both Garajau and Caniço de Baixo are good locations from where one can hike and walk the islands amazing levada irrigation system spanning 2,500 kilometers, which meander round the mountains. We recommend you use Turitrans, which is located at the entrance to the apartment in Caniço de Baixo and highly recommended by our guests. They only take a maximum of 8 on their walks and 15 on their tours. They use mini busses for all their excursions. They also collect guests in Garajau.

One reason we do not recommend car hire is because this company does such good trips and walks and many of our guests find this a more relaxing way of seeing the island.
Car Hire
We do not recommend booking car hire before leaving the UK, because if a car is needed it may only be for a few days rather than for the full week. Indeed you may decide when your arrive that you would prefer to use taxis or public transport.
Public Transport is exceedingly good in Madeira.
But if you decide to book a car we will still arrange the transfer of keys in Madeira
